Shelby County Sheriff's Office offering third Citizens Sheriff's Academy

You can now apply for{}the Shelby County Sheriff's Office's third{}Citizens Sheriff's Academy.

The Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for the academy, which starts March 6, 2014.

The Citizens Sheriff's Academy is a 12-week program that is designed to introduce and educate citizens to the various law enforcement practices and procedures of the Sheriff's Office, including criminal investigations, laws, the court system, uniform/patrol division, drug task force, tactical response unit and other special units of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

The program will also include a tour of the county jail, an opportunity to "ride-along" on patrol with a deputy and an opportunity to receive basic firearms safety training and use the Sheriff's Office firearms range.

The academy is open to anyone who is 18-years-old or older who lives or works in Shelby County.

All applicants are subject to a criminal background check and a driver's license check.

Classes will be every Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Training Center on McDow Road in Columbiana. Class size is limited to 20 students.
