Jefferson County Sheriff's Office searching for missing 66-year-old woman suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's

The Alabama Department of Public Safety has issued a Missing Senior Alert for 66-year-old Lula Hazzard Skanes, who went missing from her home in Pinson Friday.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. -- Jefferson County sheriff's deputies are searching for an elderly woman who went missing Friday night.

Lula Hazzard Skanes, a 66-year-old who suffers from dementia and Alzheimer's, was reported missing around 8:30 p.m. by her daughter. Skanes was last seen around 3:30 p.m. at the family's home in the 1100 block of Oak Creek Trail.

Skanes son, Michael Skanes, says "It's scary because we don't know if somebody just picked her up, and we have a lot of weird people out here in this world."

Skanes, who is around 5-foot-1 and 120 pounds, is believed to be carrying a large gym bag. A description of her clothing wasn't available.

Deputies continued their search for the woman Saturday with the assistance of a K9 unit.
