Update: Shooting at Federal Courthouse Building in Birmingham; Gunman identified

There has been a shooting inside the Federal Courthouse building in Birmingham. According to a source inside the courthouse, (update: Confirmed by FBI) a man walked into the Chief Clerk's office mumbling about a will. He then put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

He was still alive when he was taken to a hospital.

We have a crew on the scene and will have more information as it becomes available.


Update:4th Avenue is closed between 17th and 18th Street - Employees and attorneys are being allowed in courthouse.


Update:The shooter has been described as an elderly white male.

The shooter was an employee of the federal district court. The FBI along with Birmingham Police Department responded to the scene, and the investigation will be conducted by the Birmingham Police Department Homicide Division.

There is no threat to the Federal Courthouse.

The Jefferson County Coroner's office has identified the shooter as David Lee Williams, 50.
