Sleep-deprived shoppers scoop up Black Friday sales

Sleep-deprived shoppers spent Thursday evening and Friday morning scooping up savings.

"We didn't know how many people were going to come in," said Effi Scholnick, who works at a kiosk inside the Riverchase Galleria. "It was packed here, and you couldn't move."

Around 3 a.m. Friday, shoppers dedicated to deals swarmed the Hoover mall.

"I think that we need to get some rest, because I am kind of tired and my feet are hurting," said 9-year-old Kiyah Gamble.

Sales during the holiday season account for about 35 percent of all retail activity in Alabama for the year.

The Alabama Retail Association estimates that retailers in the state might see a 2 percent bump in sales this season compared with the last.
