Ashville High School student, 17, dies in crash involving school bus

An Ashville High School student died in an accident involving a school bus Friday morning in St. Clair County.

Authorities say 17-year-old Ashley Cartier was killed around 7 a.m. when the vehicle she was driving rear-ended a bus for special needs students near the 8000 block of Highway 23. The driver of the bus wasn't injured and no students were aboard at the time of the accident.

Friends and classmates created a memorial for Cartier, who was a member of the school band and a senior on the dance line, at the school after learning of her tragic and untimely death, ABC 33/40 reporter Haley Westbrook reported via Twitter.

One friend left the following note on the Cartier memorial poster:

"Ashley, I love you beautiful. I'm so glad we finally became the bestest friends and thank you so much for always having my back! I'll miss you!"

Ashville High has decided to dedicate its football team's first game against Springville to Cartier. The Bulldogs will have a moment of silence and release balloons in her honor before the game, which will begin at 7 p.m. at Kin Logan Stadium.

UPDATE:St. Clair County School Superintendent Jenny Seals confirms the bus involved in the crash was a special needs bus.{} Again, no children were on the bus at the time of the crash.{} However, a student was driving the vehicle that rear-ended the bus.{} The crash is under investigation, but we've learned that student died in the accident.

Seals says the driver of the bus is okay, physically.

St. Clair County Sheriff's representatives are now confirming a bus crash.{} It happened around 7:00 Friday morning in the 8000 block of Alabama Highway 23.{} We know there were no children on the bus at the time of the accident.
