Stevenson man eyeing church to make wife's grave in front yard legal
STEVENSON, Ala. (AP) - A northeast Alabama man wants to set up a church in his home to avoid a court order to remove his wife's grave from the front yard.
James Davis said Tuesday he plans to be the minister of the Stevenson Bible Church, which has a website posted by a supporter from California.
Davis says the move might help him avoid state court orders to unearth the grave of wife Patsy Davis. Davis buried her in his front yard following her death in 2009 after the city refused a permit.
The Alabama Supreme Court on Friday refused to overturn a lower court order requiring removal of the grave. Work could begin this week on disinterment.
Davis' lawyer says he doesn't know how calling the house a church will help in court.
