Alabama students will not be required to make up snow days

Students will not have to make up days missed this week due to winter storm.

Each school district must request a waiver from the state department of education to have the missed days excused.

The legislature passed a law after the April 27, 2011 tornadoes that allowed for missed school days if the Governor declares a state of emergency.

There has been some confusion with this story. It was originally posted on ABC 33/40's website and it is in response to a winter storm that affected north central Alabama in late January 2014. Because of the way some content is shared between sister stations ABC 33/40 and KATV, the story appeared to have also been posted referencing a winter storm in Arkansas. This story only pertains to Alabama. We have also edited the headline as of Feb 4 to indicate that it is about students in Alabama. We apologize for any confusion.
