A man who apparently had no problem torturing three women for a decade, suddenly had nothing to say as he stood before a judge for the first time in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ariel Castro stood with his eyes looking down and never spoke during his court appearance. The judge set bail at eight million dollars. Castro is charged with kidnapping and rape.

Prosecutors said Castro captured each of his victims by offering them a ride. Instead, they say he used ropes and chains and held them captive in a house of terror. The women were kept in separate rooms. One of them gave birth to a daughter six years ago. There were several miscarriages.

Only one of the women,{}Michele Knight remains in a Cleveland hospital. Knight has told investigators she was pregnant five times. Each time, Castro punched her in the stomach so she would suffer a miscarriage.

Castro's two brothers were released and not charged in the case.
