Sylacauga Police Department growing beards for fundraiser

Police officers in Sylacauga are growing facial hair for a great cause.

It's the second year for the department fundraiser.

Participating officers will donate $20 to "Project Lifesaver International," which specializes in equipment that helps keep track of mentally ill patients.

For the next 60 days officers are allowed to go against department protocol and grow their beards.

Capt. Kelley Johnson says it's a simple way for officers to help a great cause.

"It helps us to purchase the equipment that we use without charging the patient or the person that we're going to put it on, without charging them or their family," he said.

One complete unit for Project Lifesaver is valued around $300.

Johnson says female officers also donate to the cause. The fundraiser goes from Nov. 25 to January 25.
