Tax preparer for H&R Block in Centreville charged, accused of stealing money from clients

Kayla Payne, 27, is facing charges of forgery, theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and identity theft, according to investigators with the Centreville Police Department.{}

Police say Payne worked for H&R block in Centreville for two years, and while employed there, she took out refund loans in the names of customers who sought her services in preparing their 2012 taxes. {}According to Centreville police investigator James Northcutt, many of the victims were friends of the suspect and were oblivious to the crime until police began its probe into Payne."They [the victims] were not aware of it at the time. A lot of them hadn't checked their taxes that they were suppose to get back," Northcutt said. "When we got to contacting them, some of them were up to a thousand dollars short."{}After several months of investigating, police arrested Payne{}Monday. She has since bonded out of jail.Northcutt said H&R Block is conducting its own investigation. So far, the company has paid back more than $5,800 to victims as they continue to learn the scope of the fraud.{}"They are taking care of the rest of them as they find out who they are," said Northcutt.{}Several attempts to contact representatives with H&R block were unsuccessful. Multiple phone calls and emails were not returned.{}
