Teen accused of plotting to bomb classmates

An east Alabama high school student faces an attempted assault charge after, authorities say, he planned to use homemade explosives in a terrorist attack on fellow students at his school.

Derek Shrout, 17, is a student at Russell County High School in Seale.{} He{}is due in court for a hearing in Russell County Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Heath Taylor{}said{}one of Shrout's teachers discovered a{}journal{}and turned it over to authorities.{} It reportedly{}outlined the plans and named six students and one teacher as targets.

Taylor told a local newspaper{}a search of Shrout's home found several small tobacco cans and two large cans that contained pellets. Taylor said the devices were just "a step or two away from being ready to explode."
