Authorities at Birmingham airport investigate suspicious item found in luggage (TSA statement)

The Birmingham Police Department's Bomb Squad Friday morning investigated a suspicious item found in a person's luggage at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

Shortly before noon, airport spokeswoman Toni Herrera-Bast said the item was found not to be a threat and law enforcement has cleared the scene.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the investigation, including the Transportation Security Administration. The TSA released a statement shortly after the incident stating the following:

"TSA identified a suspicious item inside a checked bag this morning at BHM.{} In an abundance of caution, our baggage check room and the checkpoint and airline ticket counters above that room {}were evacuated briefly (from 1129 until 1154) {}until the Birmingham Police Dept. Bomb Squad could remove the suitcase and the item for further analysis.{} Operations at BHM have returned to normal.

"On background: the bomb squad moved the bag offsite and further questions on the resolution should be directed to them."
