Birmingham nearing decision on new fire chief

Birmingham is nearing a decision on the new fire chief following the death of former Chief Ivor Brooks in May. (

The City of Birmingham could name its new fire chief as early as this week, ABC 33/40 has learned.The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service has been without a chief since May following the death of Fire Chief Ivor Brooks. The longtime city leader died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 57.Since then, three assistant fire chiefs have been working to fill in the role. According to the department, those members of the executive staff (and their respective divisions) include: Christopher Brooks (operations), {}Charles Gordon (fiscal operations) and Reginald Anderson (administration).

Sources say interviews have been held for potential candidates.

The Mayor's Office confirms, saying one of the assistant fire chiefs is being strongly considered for the chief position.
