"Toys for Tots" campaign kicks off

The U.S. Marines are on a mission. One they have less than 60 days to complete.

The goal is to make sure every child has something under the tree come Christmas morning. The "Toys for Tots" campaign began Thursday.

ABC 33/40 is proud to be a part of the campaign. Last year we collected 85,000 toys and helped 27,000 families. That meant each child in those families received three toys.{}

This year, even more families are in need. Now, you can start filling that need.

"We want to turn thousands of kids frowns into smiles, to help less fortunate kids to help them out this year for Christmas," says Zilal Graham as he and his fellow Marines stand guard at Toys "R" Us stores in Hoover and The Summit."It means a lot for the Marines to do this, each and every year," says Graham.Thursday and Friday are the kickoff days for the annual Marine's "Toys for Tots" drive. Customers may donate new, unwrapped toys and baby products at any Toys"R"Us or Babies"R"Us store through Sunday, December 2.

At a luncheon Thursday, one of this year's biggest sponsors, Keller Williams Realtors, helped kick off the drive.

Kathy Wheeler says the need is great.{} "The need is bigger than ever, we know that, we've heard it from our community, our churches, the people we're in business with every day and we are instrumental in making sure every child has a present for Christmas," says Wheeler.
