Tuscaloosa county selects new school superintendent


The Tuscaloosa County Board of Education has unanimously chosen a superintendent from Mississippi as its new leader.Board members Thursday morning voted to hire Elizabeth Swinford, of the Vicksburg Warren School District as its new superintendent. Board member Mark Nelson says Swinford was chosen for her energy and passion for students. She is expected to begin her new role July 1.Swinford has served as superintendent in Mississippi since 2010, and was associate superintendent of human resources at the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Louisiana between 2003 and 2010. Swinford began her career as an assistant principal in California in 1996 and has a doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.Swinford replaces Frank Costanzo, who retired in March.
