Tuscaloosa Mayor could become highest paid in Alabama

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox

The Tuscaloosa city council is considering raising the Mayor's salary.

Walt Maddox currently earns $100,000 per year, but if he wins the next election, that salary could go up to $140,000.

Three separate pay scales have been proposed. Councilors say it is necessary since the Mayor doesn't receive retirement benefits or cost of living raises like non elected city workers.

If approved, the pay raise would go into effect next August after the Mayoral election.
