Tuscaloosa organization taking action after weekend violence
A Tuscaloosa organization is asking the Tuscaloosa community to take a pledge after an 18-year-old was killed outside a nightclub Sunday morning. Labarron Rice was fatally shot outside The Secret Club on 10th Avenue West.
"I just want to know what can we do and what can I do?" asked Tuscaloosa resident Cassius Lanier. "It touched home to me because I'm a father."
Lanier is part of a group called Community Unity that launched a campaign Tuesday called "Take 30." The movement urges anyone in the community to take 30 seconds to think before they react to a situation for 30 days.
Lanier added: "30 seconds to think. 30 seconds to pray. 30 seconds to cease fire. And after this 30, we want 30 more until we make it a habit."
The group will host events to spread the campaign. The first one is scheduled Wednesday evening. An open microphone night will be held at Archibald & Woodrow's Bar-B-Q on U.S. Highway 82. The evening also benefits Rice's family.
