UAB assistant Reggie Johnson to remain on staff after demotion

Reggie Johnson will no longer be UAB's defensive coordinator but he will continue to be on the coaching staff.

Blazers coach Garrick McGee announced that Johnson will coach outside linebackers. McGee decided to demote Johnson and promote Jimmy Williams to defensive coordinator on Sunday, a day after UAB's 37-23 loss to FAU in it's Conference USA opener. Williams had been the assistant head coach.

"Reggie's a very good football coach, very good friend," McGee said. "He's been around the block in the business. He understands how this business works. This business is about winning and about production. When you're not getting the production, you have to make a change."

UAB (1-4, 0-1) is last in Conference USA in total yardage, giving up nearly 480 yards per game, and the Blazers have given up 28 points or more in every game this season.

"Those numbers are not acceptable," McGee said. "We expect better and I'm not going to just stand around and watch and continue to say we're going to keep doing what we're doing and get better at it. I don't think that's fair to our fans and I don't think that's fair to our student-athletes."

UAB plays C-USA foe FIU in Miami on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
