UAB offers 24/7 hyperbaric wound treatment

      Some wounds can prove to be a challenge to heal, especially when infected. Many of these are called "chronic wounds".

      Now, UAB Hospital is able to treat those wounds 24/7 with a new clinic. The hyperbaric and wound clinic UAB Hospital has two{} hyperbaric oxygen chambers.{}

      Hyperbaric chambers can heal chronic wounds by increasing atmospheric pressure, which causes oxygen saturation in the blood.

      During treatment, a patient will lie down in the chamber while the pressure is increased up to three atmospheres.

      They can communicate with technicians via an intercom system, watch TV or even sleep while undergoing treatment.

      The chambers can also treat carbon dioxide poisoning, embolisms, as well as patients with vascular disease.
