Professional soccer will visit the Birmingham this spring.
It could serve as tryout to see if the city can support it's own franchise.
UAB will host the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League (NASL) Friday, March 21 at West Campus Field. The contest is sponsored by the Birmingham Hammers, which is a group that could like to bring professional soccer to Birmingham.
"Events like this will allow us to show leagues and investors that we can be a great place for professional soccer to find a home," Hammers President Morgan Copes said in a press release.
Funds from the exhibition match will to go the Hammers efforts to score Birmingham a pro team.
The NASL is a 13 team league with franchises in Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville and Cary, North Carolina among others.
The Atlanta Silverbacks finished 12-5-1 last season and fell to the New York Cosmos in the NASL Soccer Bowl, which is the league's annual championship match.
