UAB's Nelson named C-USA Special Teams Player of Week
Jamarcus Nelson week one heroics were still a hot topic two day after the fact.
The UAB junior was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week. He broke a Blazers record with 367 all-purpose yards in Saturday's overtime loss to Troy. Nelson had three touchdowns, including a 97 yard kickoff return, which is the longest in school history.
"Him playing as well as he did did not surprise any of us," UAB coach Garrick McGee said. "It may have surprised everybody else but we're at practice everyday and we see the commitment that he made to being one of the top receivers in this conference. It doesn't surprise me at all that he had a big day."
Nelson caught 10 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns against the Trojans.
East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week and North Texas linebacker Zachary Orr earned defensive honors.
UAB plays LSU in Baton Rouge on Saturday. The game is set for 6 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
