United Way Young Leaders Society helps build playground

At this time of year it's especially difficult to see a family or community in need and realize you don't have the financial resources to help. That doesn't mean you can't give.{}

The United Way Young Leaders Society is the first of its kind in Tuscaloosa. Members, ages 21 to 45, now have the opportunity to participate in organized community service.

Today, the group teamed up with PNC Bank to build a playground in one of Tuscaloosa's tornado-damaged areas. They hope events like this one will help build leadership skills that will transcend far beyond Tuscaloosa.

The organization was formed just last month. It already has more than 50 members.

Jackie Wuska is president and CEO of the United Way of West Alabama. She says the United Way saw a need to form an organization similar to those in surrounding communities.

"Coming from Birmingham, there are many young professional organizations that serve the community. And one of my goals for United Way was to create the Young Leaders Society so that we could create that next generation of leadership in our community to support the community and address our most critical needs," she said.
