U.S. Conference of Mayors in Birmingham Thursday

As part of Birmingham's Empowerment Week, the U.S. Conference of Mayors will host panel discussions in the Magic City at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. The panels will be held Thursday morning.

Birmingham Mayor William Bell will host the gathering. Immediately following the two panels, Charleston, South Carolina Mayor Joe Riley, known as the "Dean of America's Mayors" will offer remarks on the role of mayors on the work left to be done in the fight for civil rights.

The moderator for the first panel is Kevin Johnson, Mayor of Sacramento, California. The mayors participating include Michael Nutter from Philadelphia, PA, Paul Soglin, of Madison, WI, Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans and Marilyn Strickland of Tacoma, WA. The panel begins at 9:00 a.m.

The second panel will be moderated by Don Plusquellic, Mayor of Akron, Ohio. Panelists include Alvin Brown, Mayor of Jacksonville, FL, Chris Cabaldon, of West Sacramento, CA, Greg Fischer, of Louisville, KY and Ardell Brede of Rochester, MN. The discussion begins at 10:25.
