Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes is no longer in school.
The school's student judicial board ruled that Holmes should be "permanently separated from the university" following his involvement in an April fight in downtown Blacksburg, VA.
Holmes faces a charge of misdemeanor assault from the incident.
He gained 280 yards and scored four touchdowns for the Hokies last season.
Holmes loss deals a blow to Virginia Tech's attempt to establish a consistent running game, which was a weakness for the Hokies last season.
Sophomore J.C. Coleman and redshirt freshman Trey Edmunds figure to be the main options at running back when Virginia Tech opens the season against Alabama in Atlanta on August 31.
