Volunteers participate in Birmingham Reads Day

Reading is fundamental and critical to a{}child's success in life. That's the message Thursday as hundreds of volunteers participate in Birmingham Reads Day at Birmingham City Schools.

The annual program, sponsored by Better Basics and the Junior League of Birmingham, seeks to encourage elementary school-age children to pick up a book and read. Volunteers read to children in classrooms and give{}a book to each{}student to take home.

Birmingham Mayor William Bell, Police Chief A.C. Roper and Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon are expected to volunteer at Brown Elementary School.
