Water Works Board says mining operation will damage water supply

The Birmingham Water Works Board is trying to appeal a mining permit in Jasper.

The company says if the Shepherd Bend Mine starts operation, it will damage the water supply it takes from the Black Warrior river. It says it takes anywhere from 65 to 85 million gallons of water per day out of the river which is taken to a treatment plant in Birmingham.

They also say it is scared that metal discharges like aluminum and copper might contaminate the water, but a geologist with the Alabama Surface Mining Commission testified there should not be any noticeable affects to drinking water.
