Weather impacts Georgia and Alabama blood supply

Winter weather and icy road conditions threaten blood supplies in large areas of Alabama and Georgia. LifeSouth says it successfully rebuilt the blood supply after the holiday slowdown, and now the weather seems to be the cause for the most recent shortage. According to LifeSouth, the traffic gridlock caused by icy roads, forced the organization to cancel blood drives.

"On Tuesday, icy roads in Mobile,Atlanta and Birmingham have caused LifeSouth to cancel blood drives and closemany of its donor centers," said LifeSouth Director of District Operations J.D.Pettyjohn. "At some of our locations we've had staff stranded for more than 24hours because they were unable to travel home."

All blood donors must be at least17 years old, or 16 with parental permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds andbe in good health. A photo I.D. is also required. Check or the LifeSouth Facebookpage for information on center reopening.
