Superman changed clothes inside phone booths. In decades past, people would seek these booths out in order to make a phone call.
On this day in 1889, William Gray patented the first coin-operated telephone. The first phone booth came along in 1905.
By 1960, the Bell System installed its one millionth phone booth.
Time, of course, has changed all of this. Cell phones have replaced the need for the coin operated phones. The few that remain are handled by independent operators.
