To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement, the city of Birmingham will build a monument honoring foot soldiers, people who marched and rallied during that time.
The $90,000 monument will go inside Kelly Ingram Park, and it will be built in 2014. The City of Birmingham held a contest for its design. Fifteen people entered the competition. The winner will be announced in September.
Mayor William Bell and other city leaders made the announcement Saturday as the nation honored the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
