Woman who abandoned newborn at Tuscaloosa hospital arrested in Birmingham, facing child endangerment charge

Shown in this surveillance photo released by Tuscaloosa police in September 2013 is Kacie Blankenship leaving DCH Regional Medical Center follow the birth of her child.

Investigators in Tuscaloosa have identified and issued a warrant for chemical endangerment of a child against a woman who abandoned her newborn child at DCH Regional Medical Center last year.

Kacie Michelle Blankenship, 23, was arrested recently at an area motel room by Birmingham police on an outstanding warrant in Limestone County, where she is currently being held. Following her arrest, Blankenship admitted that she did leave the hospital Sept. 19, 2013 after giving birth to her baby, who tested positive for cocaine and opiates before being taken into protective custody by the state.

Tuscaloosa police will serve the warrant against Blankenship after her case in Limestone Co. is resolved. She also has outstanding warrants in Shelby County.

Blankenship's child remains in the custody of the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
