Worst case scenario now reality in Atlanta

Georgia Power reports outages already at 177,000 customers and climbing as ice continues to coat trees and power lines. The majority of the power outages are in metro Atlanta. This is only the beginning. The National Weather Service says huge amounts of ice will make travel "impossible" in the hardest-hit areas.

{}The NWS continues to say this winter storm will have "historical significance." As much as one and one-third inches of ice is possible along a corridor between Atlanta and Augusta. Right now{}125 spreaders and snow plows{}are in the city{}of Atlanta.

From Texas to the Carolinas, roads are slick with ice, thousands are without power, and a wintry mix is falling in many areas. The Mid-Atlantic region also is expected to be hit as the storm crawls east.
