WVU names Clint Trickett starting QB for opener vs Alabama

Clint Trickett

A former Florida State quarterback will get the start when Alabama and West Virginia kickoff the 2014 season. WVU coach Dana Holgorsen announced that Clint Trickett will be his week one starter against the Tide.

Trickett transferred to West Virginia before the 2013 season and was it's starting quarterback the final eight games. He threw for 1,605 yards, seven touchdowns, seven interceptions and the Mountaineers were 2-6 with him as a starter.

Trickett missed spring football practice while he recovered from offseason shoulder surgery. Holgorsen didn't see enough from the healthy quarterbacks to unseat the incumbent starter.

The possibility exists that Trickett's former Florida State teammate Jacob Coker could be the starting quarterback on the other side of the field that first week.

Coker enrolled at Alabama earlier this month and will compete for the quarterback job with a group that includes Blake Sims and Cooper Bateman.

Alabama and West Virginia open the season Aug. 30 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
