Birmingham firefighter's brother dies in house fire

1 fatality reported in house fire near downtown Birmingham

UPDATE (9:00 PM) - Birmingham Fire Captain Bryan Harrell says two Birmingham firefighters were related to the victim in Saturday night's house fire. The victim was one firefighters brother and an uncle to another firefighter.

Harrell also says the second person originally reported as inside the home and taken to a hospital for burns was a neighbor who tried to save the victim. The neighbor suffered first degree burns but did not seek medical care.


UPDATE (1:01 PM) - ABC 33/40 has just confirmed the man killed in last night's fire was the brother of a Birmingham firefighter.

UPDATE (11:09 PM) - Fire officials on scene said another person was able to get out of the house, and was taken to the hospital for burns.

He said at this time they believe it was just those two people inside, and that the house is destroyed.

The call went out as a person trapped originally, but when crews arrived on scene and tried to enter, the size of the fire pushed them back.


Multiple fire crews are on scene battling a house fire on the north side of Downtown Birmingham.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue report the fire is at 1321 16th st N, and that the occupant has died.
