Birmingham Investigators piecing together homicide near Rickwood field

Birmingham Police are conducting a homicide investigation in Ensley

UPDATE (7:10 p.m) Birmingham Police Department Sgt. Shelton has identified the victim as Erwin Jones, 30 BM

Preliminary investigation revealed that two black males each armed with handguns, approached the victim and others in the courtyard of the Rickwood Apartments.

The suspects then fired several rounds at Jones, striking him multiple times.

Sgt. Shelton said patrol officers believe that the suspect(s) and victim were involved in a dispute over a handgun and drugs, which may have led to the homicide.

While processing the scene investigators recovered handguns and marijuana.

West Precinct officers have responded to the location before, which resulted in the confiscation of handguns and other items.

No official connection has been confirmed between the shooting and the previous confiscation.

UPDATE (9:00 p.m) - Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham Police said investigators are confident by the end of the night they will be able to identify two suspects wanted in connection to the shooting at Rickwood Apartments that left one dead.

Edwards said three black males gathered on a porch at Rickwood apartments, when suddenly two other black males came around the corner and confronted them about stolen merchandise.

The two suspects pulled out guns and started firing, according to investigators.

One person killed was in his thirties, and has yet to be identified.

Witnesses told police that the suspects left the scene on foot.

Birmingham Police are on scene of what is now confirmed as a homicide at 12th St West and 2nd Ct West in Ensley near Rickwood field.

Officers originally had responded to reports of a person suffering from a gunshot wound.

ABC 33/40 has a crew on scene and will provide updates once more information becomes available.
