Caught on camera: Campus apartment employee steals from student
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. —
Tuscaloosa Police said an employee of a student housing complex was arrested and charged with burglary.
The surveillance video spread online. It showed the suspect going into an apartment at Campus Evolution Villages and taking off with valuables.
"This is not the first time, and I hope it will be the last time," University of Alabama Senior Richard said.
He posted the video to Facebook. He said it was taken by the security camera inside his friend's bedroom.
"They accessed her bedroom without her permission, or any working orders," Richard said, "After that, she asked her roommates to check her bedroom and many things were stolen."
Richard said a load of cash and watch were discovered missing.
He said his friend, who wished to remain anonymous, wasn't the only victim. Richard said dozens of students are commenting on his post, sharing similar stories.
"Many students had been hustled by the management in Campus Evolution Village," he said, "They were threatening that they weren't dealing with the situation unless they take the video down. It was their fault. I think it's rude and also illegal."
ABC 33/40's requests to management for comment went unanswered.
Residents said they've received an email stating the burglary was the first of its kind. But Richard disagreed.
"They need to apologize for what they did. And it doesn't seem like this will be the last time."
UPDATE: CEV Spokesperson Kerri Fulks told ABC 33/40, “The well-being of our residents is a top priority. Late last week, a burglary occurred in our community that was committed by an employee, who was quickly identified and terminated for the action. We are cooperating fully with the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s investigation of this incident.”
