CDC warns against mothers ingesting placenta
For some, this may seem a bit unusual.
Mothers ingesting their own placenta has been growing in popularity.
The CDC is now warning ingesting it could cause serious health problems for your new born.
The CDC says some mothers encapsulate their placenta to swallow.
According to americanpregnancy.org it has the potential for a handful of benefits.
Including an increased release of the hormone oxytocin, which helps the uterus return to normal size and encourages bonding with the infant.
It also increases a stress-reducing hormone and milk production.
But even the website says there is little scientific evidence to support those claims.
Mother and doctor Michele Kong says there is a reason the placenta should not be ingested.
"It's dangerous, because you can get Bacteremia from it or sepsis if it's in the blood stream, you can certainly get meningitis from it," said Kong.
Dr. Kong recommends speaking with your doctor if you are thinking about swallowing your placenta.
