One dead in house fire in Chilton County, man in custody
CHILTON COUNTY, Ala. —
UPDATE (12:05 a.m.): Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon says suspect Dustin Martin was found sleeping on a barn off County Road 2. The Sheriff says his vehicle was spotted Thursday night and then a pursuit ensued with law enforcement. Martin wrecked his vehicle on a bridge on County Road 2 and then fled on foot.
Several law enforcement agencies helped the Chilton County Sheriff's Office search for Martin on foot. The Bibb County Sheriff's Office brought in dogs to help. Sheriff Shearon says they were able to double their man power in the search for Martin, thanks to help from other agencies.
Martin was taken into custody without incident. The Sheriff says Martin is the suspect in a homicide investigation (stemming from the fatal fire) and theft of property.
UPDATE (11:19 p.m.):
The Chilton Co. Sheriff's Office shared in a Facebook post that Dustin Martin is now in custody.
UPDATE (September 14th, 8:40 p.m.):
Chilton Co. Sheriff's Office has asked people in the area around County Road 2 and 73 to lock doors and secure vehicles. A dog team is assisting in the search for Dustin Martin, who is on foot and believed to be armed.
One person is dead following a house fire in Chilton County Wednesday morning, September 13th.
West Chilton, Jemison and Cedar Grove Fire Department's responded to the house, located near Chilton County Road 781 and 203. The sheriff's office says the house was fully involved by the time first units arrived.
After extinguishing the flames, units discovered one person died in the fire. The victim's identification will be released at a later date.
In a post on the Chilton County Sheriff's Office website, they say Dustin Wade Martin is sought in connection with the case. He was last reported in Montevallo.
