Coosa County inmate recaptured in Georgia
UPDATE: 27-year-old Shane Vernon was captured in Georgia on November 21.
Right now, authorities are searching for escaped inmate Shane Anthony Vernon. Deputies say the 27 year old subject is considered armed and dangerous. Vernon escaped from the Coosa County Jail Sunday afternoon.
Investigator's say after escaping the jail, Shane Vernon broke into a home on Hwy 231 in Rockford. Vernon allegedly robbed the residents before tying them up and stealing a vehicle from the home. He apparently abandoned the car near Living Water Baptist Church on Elmore County Road 80, which is just south of the Coosa/Elmore County Line.
According to Coosa County Sheriff Terry Wilson, Vernon robbed a second home Monday morning. The house is located on County Road 80 in Titus. Deputies said Vernon restrained the residents and stole their silver Chrysler Pacifica minivan.
A joint search by authorities revealed Vernon stole a small red mini bike from a residence in the area and remains on the run.
But in Rockford, where Vernon also stole guns, lifelong resident Ray Johnson finds it all a bit puzzling for a small town. Johnson said, "Never get that much attention."
The Coosa County Sheriff's Office said Vernon has made breaking out of jail a habit: doing it twice in a thirty day time-span. Johnson said, "Oh seems like they should have had a closer look on him."
On Sunday, a Coosa County Jail corrections officer let Vernon make an inmate phone call. Somehow, the officer on duty didn't shut a jail door properly allowing him to escape.
Tim Taylor seemed to have a solution. Taylor told ABC 33/40, "Yea we got one of the jail-breakers come around here we got something for him."
Taylor is building a retirement home in Rockford, where he thinks of it as a place with peace and quiet. "I was kinda shocked in a little town like Rockford, that somebody was escaping from the jail and then I heard today, he's escaped twice."
He's hoping to move up here soon from Florida. But Taylor said he'll be ready should anything happen. "In Florida we don't keep guns around but up here we're gonna keep a loaded gun in the house, that's for sure," Taylor explained. "And one down in the barn that's for sure."
The search for Vernon is under the control of the United States Marshal Service. Vernon has felony warrants for unlawful imprisonment, robbery, theft of motel vehicle, and escape.
Shane Vernon is described as a white male, 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing 130 pounds. He has a tattoo that reads "ride or die." He also has writing on his forearm, a chines symbol on his neck, and the word "County" written on his left shoulder blade.
If you have any information on the whereabouts of Shane Anthony Vernon, please call the Coosa County Sheriff's office at 256-377-2211, your local law enforcement agency, or U.S. Marshal's at (334) 223-7401
Investigators say Vernon managed to escape the jail after being allowed to use the inmate telephone system. Vernon noticed one of the doors in the area was not properly secured and gained access to the maintenance area in the jail ceiling. Once there, he went around four security doors and ran from the prison. The Coosa County Sheriff's Office says an internal investigation is underway concerning the correctional officer.
