Former Etowah County teacher accused of being sexually involved with student
A former Etowah County teacher is facing charges after allegedly being sexually involved with a student.
51-year-old Sonya Ann Wilks Bailey is charged with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student, second degree sodomy and second degree rape. Bailey is accused of sending explicit photos and being sexually involved with a student while working as a teacher.
Bailey, of Arab, resigned from the Etowah County Board of Education on August 28, according to Etowah County Superintendent Dr. Alan Cosby. She taught business education at West End High School and had been with the system about 15 years.
Dr. Cosby called it a "very unfortunate situation. These people are trusted with the safety of our kids."
“This type of ridiculous behavior is completely uncalled for by someone who was trusted by the community to teach our kids,” Sheriff Entrekin said in a release.
She is being held at the Etowah County Detention Center on $60,000 bond.
