Get Fit: 16 arrested in operation targeting stolen property trafficking in central Alabama

Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls (abc3340.com)

Authorities today announced numerous arrests and the seizure of more than $600,000 in cash in connection with an investigation into an "organized fencing operation."

"Operation Get Fit Commenced with both federal and state law enforcement officers executing simultaneous search warrants on thirteen locations in Birmingham, Bessemer and Shelby Counties," Vestavia Hills police said in a release. "The Operation targeted Cashmax, Check Exchange, Cash 101, Cash Plus 1, and Scott’s Jewelry and Pawn locations, owned and operated by Steve Scott."

"The enterprise involved brick-and-mortar stores buying and selling stolen retail merchandise. For the past two years, these stores bought merchandise they knew to be stolen from professional shoplifters. For this investigation, retail partners provided merchandise to undercover law enforcement officers who, in turn, presented that merchandise to employees as stolen. The employees purchased the property knowing it was stolen and then sold that property through Ebay and Craigslist. The Operation culminated with the seizure of $618,936.24 in U.S. Currency and over a half a million dollars in new-in-box retail property from the stores."

"The U.S Secret Service is proud to work with its partners to dismantle a large-scale network of traffickers in stolen property and other criminal activities," said Special Agent in Charge Michael Williams. "This investigation is a great example of a collaborative effort by law enforcement, the private sector, and the Birmingham community."
