The game must go on: FIU players' game at Legion Field offers escape from reality
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Sports are a great escape from reality, especially in times like this, as Irma threatens the state of Florida.
Friday night the bright lights took away some of the stress of the storm.
For a few hours life was almost back to normal for Florida International University football players and fans.
As Hurricane Irma drew nearer to Florida - the most important thing on fan and father Earl Williams mind was getting his son out of Florida at all costs.
Thanks to UAB and the City of Birmingham, Williams watched his son on the field Friday, safe from the storm.
Williams says being able to play helps keep the team together and on target.
"Those guys, not having to miss a week and being able to go through with this game is going to get them in a rhythm, hopefully," said Williams.
Legion Field will host two more teams Saturday.
Georgia Southern and the University of New Hampshire will play starting at 3:00 PM.
Gates open at 1:30 PM. Admission is free!
