Hospital: Flu far outnumbers hypothermia cases during Birmingham cold snap
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Birmingham doctors and nurses expect to see hypothermia patients as temperatures hover in the upper teens.
So far, staff at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center believe people are heeding the freeze warning.
ABC 33/40 News spoke with Dr. Greg Ledbetter at Brookwood Baptist who reports 0 cases of hypothermia at the medical center.
Dr. Ledbetter said more people are staying indoors due to the holidays which has kept hypothermia numbers down.
However, flu is spreading rapidly because more people are gathered in enclosed spaces.
Brookwood Baptist Medical Center is averaging 10 flu patients a day in the emergency room and 23 flu patients are currently receiving inpatient care at the hospital.
