Jefferson County Schools HR director arrested on sex with student charge
A trusted educator with Jefferson County schools faces charges of having a sexual relationship with a former male student.
Brett Kirkham, 39 years old, is charged with engaging in sex acts with a student and possession of child porn.
Kirkham, human resources director for Jefferson County schools, was placed on administrative leave earlier this month. He was arrested Thursday morning in Tuscaloosa, where he lives. He faces charges in both Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties.
Jefferson County District Attorney for the Bessemer division, Bill Veitch, says this came to light when a young man reported Kirkham to the Hueytown Police Department. Search warrants were executed on both Kirkham's work computer in Homewood and home computer in Tuscaloosa. Investigators found thousands of pictures on his home computer. Veitch believes there are more victims based on those pictures.
"We're just new in this," Veitch said. "We have the physical evidence we've collected from the computers which is damming, I'll just tell you that it's damming. I couldn't come up with an excuse if I were the defense lawyer. I'm pretty creative but I couldn't create one for this one."
Kirkham's been employed by Jefferson County schools for 16 years. Before he was HR director at the Jefferson County Board of Education, he spent years teaching in Hueytown. He was principal of Hueytown middle school. This year, he was also a finalist for the superintendent position in Decatur City Schools.
Veitch asks any other victims or witnesses to call the Hueytown Police Department with any information.
Jefferson County Schools spokesperson Nez Calhoun described Kirkham as a "brilliant man" who's never had a single problem or complaint against him since his hire in 2000.
Court records aren't yet available to show whether Kirkham has a lawyer.
