Officer injured, suspect dead, after officer involved shooting in Homewood

The Homewood Police Department tells ABC 33/40 that an officer was involved in an on-duty shooting early Saturday morning.

According to Sgt. John Carr with Homewood Police, the officer was patrolling the parking lot of the Extended Stay Hotel on State Farm Parkway around 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning when he encountered the suspect.

Investigators say the officer and suspect wrestled and that the suspect was able to get the Officer's Taser and used it against him.

The Officer pulled out his gun and shot the suspect, Sgt. Carr says.

Authorities say the suspect received aid on scene and was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Officer was transported to Brookwood Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released, Sgt Carr says.

At the request of Jefferson County District Attorney's Office and the Homewood Police Department, agents with the State Bureau of Investigation are taking over the investigation into the officer involved shooting.
