Birmingham 18-year-old struck and killed on I-59 identified

Birmingham Police say a female was died as a result of being struck by a vehicle on I-59 North at Center Street around 10:10 p.m. Saturday evening.

Birmingham Police say a female was struck and killed by a vehicle on I-59 North at Center Street around 10:10 p.m. Saturday evening.

According to officers, a driver and passenger were standing on the side of the interstate when their vehicle became disabled. While standing there, the passenger was struck by a passing car and died.

Authorities say the driver who struck the woman initially drove away from the scene but later turned himself in.

The person struck was identified as 18-year-old I'akyrai Rukell Kimbrough.

Sgt. Bryan Shelton with Birmingham Police says “Our investigators are working hard to put together exactly what happened. This is a truly said situation. While the cause of the wreck is not known, we want to remind people to pay closer attention at night when driving and slow down.”
