Man fatally struck by train in downtown Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
ABC 33/40 confirms an older man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in downtown Birmingham around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the area of 17th Street Southwest and McMillon Avenue Southwest.
According to Birmingham Police, all safety mechanisms work at the crossing.
The 17th Street railroad crossing experienced one other collision in 2015, according to the Federal Railroad Administration website.
About 8,220 cars cross the 17th Street railroad crossing each day. Three trains pass through daily.
