Traffic stop leads to discovery of weapons, possible explosive devices

UPDATE (1:03):

Birmingham police say a Dodge Ram Pickup was pulled over Thursday morning for failure to turn on head lights. Officers approached the vehicle and observed an AR-15 on the back seat of the truck.

Officer's secured the weapon and the driver said he had another weapon in the vehicle, a handgun, which was also recovered. The driver was placed under arrest and charged with violation of the state firearms act.

The passenger in the vehicle was also placed under arrest for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Officers found two more weapons inside the vehicle. Officers also recovered what appeared to be multiple improvised explosive devices inside pick-up's tool box.

Bomb technicians were notified and several devices were recovered and transported for further examination. Any charges regarding the devices remain pending.

The two individuals will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail after being processed at the Birmingham City Jail.

Two suspects are in custody at this time.
