Held for several hours at their Shelbyville home, the man had the presence of mind to give police the details of the stolen vehicle and identify their abductors as the two escaped inmates from Georgia.
In the background, the man's wife can be heard sobbing. In a heartbreaking moment, he can be heard saying "it's alright, you survived. Come here and let me hold you."
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and reports, the elderly couple was tied up while Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose ate food the woman had prepared and took numerous items from the home. The escapees then stole the couple's car. Thankfully, the couple was shaken but unharmed.
Rowe and Dubose were captured by police following a car chase and foot chase. The escapees attempted to steal another homeowner's vehicle after crashing the one stolen from the Shelbyville couple. The homeowner was armed and was joined by a neighbor holding the escapees at gunpoint until police arrived.
I think he tried to escape and they choked him down and basically hit the floor so he had some bumps and bruises,” said Austin Swing, Bedford County Sheriff
The fugitive threatened to kill Hickerson and his wife, Swing said.
“Told them that they were pretty sure they were going to be dead in 24 hours and they didn't really care who they took out in between because it was going to be as many as possible,” Swing said. “They spared them and they’re obviously very fortunate that they did
Swing says he's not sure why the two men let the couple live.
“They are obviously shaken but they know that they are very blessed to be alive,” Swing said.
