Man in charge of emergency response during deadly Gatlinburg fires resigns

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WLOS) - The man in charge of emergency response during last year's deadly wildfires in Gatlinburg has resigned.

John Matthews spent eight years as the director of emergency management in Sevier County.

His last day on the job is Aug. 18. He's taking a new position with a Tennessee construction company.

A survivors' group questions the timing of his resignation. It was announced Thursday that 911 recordings during the wildfire emergency will be released next week.

Fourteen people died in the Gatlinburg fires.
