There have been a few girls who kick for their high school football teams. But the situation in Rosman, North Carolina is a little different.

This year, Madison Fisher decided to take a leap of faith and try out for the Tigers football team, and now this linebacker an inspiration to others.

The Rosman roster is made up of some heavy hitters, but one of the toughest players on the team stands out with her long blond hair.

"I've always wanted to play, like ever since I was little," Fisher said. "I just never had the courage to do it. And then I use to go to Boys and Girls Club, and they use to have a little group that would play football everyday. I would always go, and I thought, if I can play with them, I can play on the real team."

Fisher made the Rosman team this year and plays one of the most physical positions -- linebacker.

"I'm not good at kicking, and we already have a kicker," Fisher said. "I just like playing linebacker. It's fun."

Coach Matt Stack Sr. told Fisher not to expect special treatment.

"I told her, I said you're going to be treated like everybody else. You're going to be a ballplayer. I'm going to get on your rear end just like I do with any other guy. And she was ready for it," Stack said.

Stack said he always believed Fisher was fit for the spot but admits he initially had concerns.

"I said, once we start hitting, come see me after about two to three days and tell me your thoughts. I said I had no doubt you'll be fine. I just want you to be comfortable with it, and she does a great job," Stack said.

This year Fisher has had to learn routes and plays, take hard hits and hold her own.

"It is really hard, especially when I'm in the real game with all the guys," she said. "I was like really nervous and scared. It gets easier as I play more because I know what to expect."

Fisher has had her share of doubters this season. But she's proving to everyone she's just as good as the boys.

Her ability to hang tough is seen as an inspiration to others.

"Yeah, a lot of girls will come up to me after the game and take pictures and stuff," Fisher said.

"She's such a nice girl. Everybody loves her. She's so nice, but she's mean, physical and nasty on the football field, which you got to be," Stack said. "And after she took a few hits, she gained all the respect of any of those doubters."
